Little Nature Explorers offers caregivers and children an opportunity to explore a variety of NCF properties and learn about the flora and fauna surrounding them! This group meets on Wednesday mornings from 10:30-11:30am for children ages birth through five years old.

May 15: Milestone Cranberry Bog (220 Milestone Road). Gravel paths. Stroller friendly.
May 22: Sanford Farm (121 Madaket Road). Gravel paths. Stroller friendly.

Congratulations to the most recent graduates of our Adult Learn to Swim program!

Started nearly 10 years ago by islander Jim Meehan, the program pairs adult swimmers with volunteers who teach water survival and elementary skills like the front crawl and breaststroke, as well as floating and getting out of the pool unassisted.

The nearly month-long session culminated in a celebration last week at the Nantucket Community Pool, where the classes take place.

The old baseball field at Nantucket High School was the place to be for today’s Great North American Solar Eclipse!
•
We collaborated with @mariamitchellassociation staff and astronomers, in addition to the Nantucket Public Schools and the @nantucketbgc, to offer a free and safe viewing of the eclipse for the community as it crossed the North American continent. The alignment of the Sun, Earth, and Moon created a dark shadow on the surface of the Earth that could be safely viewed with special eclipse glasses.

All public school staff and students were supplied with eclipse glasses thanks to a very generous donation by the @nantucketeducationtrust!

Last week we celebrated the end of our winter ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) semester with a potluck celebration that brought together staff, students, and their families. These gatherings provide an opportunity to share a meal, learn from each other, and, most importantly, build community.

Nearly 160 students enrolled in our ESOL program this year between the fall and winter semesters, the largest turnout in the program’s history. Classes for English learners were offered across four levels, from introduction to advanced. At the end of the semester, students receive a certificate of completion that solidifies all of their hard work.

Thank you to all the teachers and students who take extra time from their busy days to attend these evening classes and bring this program to life.

This morning we visited the Nantucket Historical Association’s 1800 House to learn how to make Nantucket woven bangle bracelets as part of our monthly team-building activities!

Maura Wendelken, NHA’s Education Manager, and Emma Young, NHA’s Education Coordinator, demonstrated how to make these accessories made of natural materials. We chose the accent color, material, and bangle width to personalize each piece.

Today’s crafty activity was even more unique as we completed our projects within the walls of the NHA’s historic 1800 House at 4 Mill Street. The property is a center for instruction in early American decorative arts and crafts, and NHA staff hold regular classes inside the early nineteenth-century structure.

This morning we had week two of our Read to a Buddy program, and Gwen🐶 snuggled up to listen to her friends read some of their favorite books.

Read to a Buddy is held on Saturday morning from 10:30-11:30am at 56 Centre Street. As a reminder, registration opens the Monday before each Saturday session.
